It is important to first clean your leather to get rid of small bits of dirt and grit, which, if not removed, can penetrate the leather and accelerate the breakdown of the leather fibers, damaging it. If the leather is relatively clean, often a quick pass with a rag or horsehair brush is all that is necessary to prep it. For more soiled items, our Leather Cleaner Kit has everything you need for safely cleaning your leather. Do not use dish soap, as this can be too aggressive on the leather.
If your leather is old, dry, cracked, or has never or only rarely been treated, we recommend starting with our Leather Conditioner (If you are allergy free, you can apply this stuff directly with your hands, as it’s also great for moisturizing your own skin). You can also use one of the flannels to rub it in. Just scoop some out and rub it into your leather.
You will see immediately how the leather will start pulling in all of the healthy, beneficial compounds of the Leather Conditioner. Note how the Leather Conditioner will darken the leather a bit. Not to worry, as this is merely a sign that the leather is receiving the nourishing properties of the conditioner, and it will in fact lighten back up in time, developing nice depth and a rich patina.
Ideally, let the leather rest with the Leather Conditioner applied overnight, or at least for a few minutes, if you can’t be bothered waiting that long. Then, take a rag and wipe off any excess conditioner before moving onto the next step.
Once the conditioner has soaked in, (or if you’re just doing a quick waxing for routine maintenance) use the Boot Wax, which is much lighter than the conditioner and helps to protect the leather (and add a shine, if desired). For this, you will want to use the application dauber. Just rub the bristles around in small circles in the wax until you’ve picked up some of it, then with the same small circular motion, transfer the wax onto the leather, spreading it out as evenly as possible as you go. You’ll want to not spend a lot of time in one area, just quickly pass the wax onto all surfaces of the leather. Once it’s entirely covered, let it sit for a few minutes to overnight and then get out the buffing brush.
Perhaps the most rewarding part of this ritual is the final buffing procedure. Essentially, this is where all of your hard work shines through. Take the buffing brush and in a back-and-forth motion, with the bristles lightly touching the leather, make it shine! For a final touch, you can try a “spit” shine by dropping or spraying a few droplets of water onto the leather and then buffing the leather with one of your shine flannels.
